Plumbing Failures And Flooded Basements

A flooded laundry room with over a foot of water.

Many homeowners feel panicked when they see their basement has flooded, but cool heads will always prevail.

Six Steps For Dealing With A Flood

The #1 claim that insurance companies pay out to on homeowner's policies are related to water damage.

Water-related damage to a home can lead to extensive damage to the walls, floors, and everything stored within the flooded area. The mold that follows a flood can have serious long-term health effects -- and the eventual costs of flooding can easily total $100,000 in damages or more.

While it is impossible to ensure that every pipe, toilet, sink, tub, faucet, and other piece of plumbing in your home will never flood, there are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself from some of the most common, chronic plumbing failures.

At Basement Systems, we provide three simple, common sense solutions for the most common avoidable basement problems. These simple add-ons help ensure that your have the best waterproofing protection available -- both inside and outside.

If you have old washer hoses, and you don't turn off the water to your washing machine every time you use it, you're putting more pressure on them than they're designed for.

Failing Washer Hoses

Unless you turn your water off every time you're done with your laundry, you may have a problem on your hands. Old-fashioned rubber washing machine hoses are not meant to withstand the constant 50psi of pressure that is placed on them by the pipes.

If these hoses fail, you will have up to 500 gallons of water pouring into your basement every hour. At Basement Systems, we've seen water literally pouring out the basement windows!

At Basement Systems, we recommend upgrading those washer hoses before they fail -- it's a small investment that will mean a big difference in your home!

Sump Pump Alarm Systems

If your basement floods from a plumbing failure, you'll want to know as soon as possible.

Each of our systems include a built-in WaterWatch™ Sump Pump Alarm that will let you know when a flood occurs by sounding off. Our newest systems can even be tied into your home's alarm system, so you receive a phone call when the alarm is sounding off.

Our sump pump system includes a floor drain, which will collect any flooding water off your floor and pump it out of your home. A unique ball-in-cup design makes this drain airtight when it's not draining water to prevent odors and humidity from rising from the sump pit into your home.

A water heater has a lifespan of approximately 7 years. When they begin to fail, they can lead to significant leaking on your basement floor.

Leaking Water Heaters

During the lifespan of your home, you will need to replace your water heater several times -- with an average system lasting approximately seven years before it should be replaced.

Because water heaters are designed to automatically refill themselves when one leaks, a leak will continue nonstop once it begins.

In some extreme cases, Basement Systems contractors have seen homes that have several feet of flooding water in them due to a failed water heater system.

We address flooding water issues like this by installing the FloodRing™ Water Heater Flood Protection System in your home. This includes a 4" PVC ring designed to collect water from your water heater and direct it to your perimeter drain.

Also available with the FloodRing™ is our WaterWatch™ Alarm, which rests inside of the system. Like our sump pump alarm, this system will sound off if it detects water. Our system can also be hooked up to some home alarm systems, so you can be notified by phone if there's an issue.
