Upgrade Your Basement To Avoid High Energy Bills!

Upgrading your basement's energy efficiency saves money on your home's utility bills, reduces drafts, and creates a more comfortable basement overall.

If your basement is cold, drafty, and humid, it may be costing you hundreds of dollars per year. Even when your floors are insulated above the basement, the cold environment will make your utilities work harder than ever just to do their daily work.

A cold, damp basement is also an uncomfortable space in the home -- one whose musty smells and mold spores may end up affecting the main area of the home. And without insulating, your basement can make the floors above uncomfortably cold.

Easy Energy Efficiency Upgrades

Upgrading your basement's energy efficiency is as simple as insulating your basement walls, upgrading the basement windows, and dehumidifying the space.

At Basement Systems, our dealers can upgrade a basement's energy efficiency quickly -- usually in less than two days.

Should I Insulate My Floor Joists?

Insulating your floor joists (i.e. the basement ceiling) will help to keep cold air out of your home, but it won't protect your basement from cold.

Why is this important? Your basement is home to your furnace, water heater, heating ducts, and hot water pipes.

These utilities will have to work harder to do their job if they're cold.

The Case Against Basement Ventilation

There are still some contractors in the industry who recommend ventilating the basement as the best way to keep it dry and healthy. However, this has proven itself to be an ineffective, outdated method of basement repair many times over.

The logic behind this method was that keeping air circulating throughout the space would "flush out" any moisture and keep the space clean and dry.

This approach, unfortunately, has two shortcomings:

  1. Condensation & Relative Humidity: Your basement is underground and naturally cooler than it is outside.

If you bring hot, humid air into a basement where the temperature drops by 20 degrees, the humidity will condensate on surfaces, leading to even more moisture.

Also: how are you drying your basement when it's raining, foggy, snowing, or just plain damp out?

  2. Loss Of Conditioned Air: You pay a lot of money to condition the air in your home. If you're sucking that air out of the house, then you're literally throwing money out the window!

Humidity & Higher Cooling Bills

What you may not realize is that humidity in your basement will lead to higher cooling bills in your home. Here's how it works: If you've ever seen a window-unit air conditioner, then you've seen that it drips constantly. This is because one of the jobs of an air conditioner is to dehumidify the air.

An air conditioner, on the other hand, is inefficient at this task; it uses far more energy to dehumidify air than a proper dehumidifier. Installing an appropriate energy efficient dehumidifier in your house is the best way to enhance your home's energy efficiency without driving up costs.
